Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
