Watkins Holds the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin May Yet Secure the International Squad

A solitary goal in his first ten top-flight appearances this season had many questioning whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's prime were over.

But, a mere four weeks later, he is the most discussed forward in England after netting seven goals in 6 straight games.

His most recent finish, in a stalemate versus Sunderland, elevated his tally to eight, seeing him become the highest English goalscorer in the Premier League so far this season.

An Impressive Return to Form

The 28-year-old moved to Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, following a nine-year period with Everton that was hampered by setbacks in its final stages.

But, the statistics underpinning his comeback in Daniel Farke's new counter-attacking 3-5-2 formation are extremely impressive.

His six-game scoring run puts him in exclusive company as just the 11th English player to score in six or more straight Premier League fixtures.

To frame that statistic, even England captain Harry Kane never managed a run lasting this many games - his longest stands at two separate five-match streaks.

And the only English striker to outdo Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who produced an eight-game scoring run for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Purple Patch?

What has made Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in this period? A latest opponent's manager summed it up aptly.

"He has the perfect timing," the manager said. "He's smart and a genuinely top-class striker and he found the timing to arrive just on time."

The ex- Sheffield United player has eleven England appearances, netting four goals, but has not played for the country since the last European Championship.

Observers feel the striker will be in consideration for the World Cup squad if he can sustain this standard.

"He looks as in shape as he has in a while," one said. "If he sustains this level of form... then he's going to be in a conversation for a World Cup place."

Fierce Competition

But, competition for places as backup to Harry Kane is fierce.

Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, fresh off a match-winning brace versus Chelsea, is presently regarded as leading in the selection race, according to some opinion.

"If you compare the two players, Watkins holds the edge in terms of using his speed to get behind teams," it was noted.

Finally, whether Calvert-Lewin is part of the squad could hinge on how many natural strikers the head coach decides to take.
