The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
