The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing water scarcity. This milestone comes on the heels of challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Indicates No Dryness

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is clear of dry or drought conditions. This shift came after weeks of significant storms that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, pockets like Modoc County were deemed abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

However, authorities caution that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. State experts point out that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
