Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with lung cancer and is set to have a surgical procedure.
The octogenarian performer, known for a string of upbeat chart-toppers from "Copacabana" cemented his status as one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have surgery to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to combat the illness, which is at an early phase.
“As my fans are aware, I recently endured six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Even though I was past the infection and performing again for my residency, my excellent physician requested an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.
“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my lung that must be removed. It’s pure luck (and a fantastic physician) that it was caught so early.”
He has rescheduled a series of forthcoming shows, but stated he would be on stage again by mid-February for his long-running concert series at his Vegas home.
He continued: “The medical team do not believe it has spread and I’m undergoing further tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. No radiation. Just chicken soup and favorite shows.
“I’m counting the days until I rejoin my familiar venue at the Westgate Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”
Manilow is presently in his 16th year of a show at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the limelight and came out as gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager privately in 2014.
The couple were in a discreet romance for in excess of 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how crucial his husband had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.
“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, returning to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re by yourself evening after evening,” he said.
“But I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I didn’t have to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a person to cry with or to celebrate with.
“I wish that young people don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
