Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
