The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
