Gareth Southgate Shares Direction on Youth Development Instead of Returning to Coaching

Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the unique sense of purpose he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate indicated his aim to channel his attention toward supporting the youth and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently existing in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Outside of The Sport

Speaking on air, he was prompted regarding speculation linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the launch of his new title, his leadership-focused book, the author shared that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for teenagers, applying insights from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate maintains that his journey coaching England, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Division

He stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His new release, Dear England, is set to offer deeper reflections on guidance and country pride drawn from his remarkable career.
