Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
