The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezers in an apartment in the western part of Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on Friday. The freezers were concealed behind a plasterboard wall in the flat, located in the city of Innsbruck.
Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed authorities last week that there had been an accident—but denied intentional killing.
Addressing the media previously, a representative for the public prosecutor's office announced the pair were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of intentional killing".
Personal details of those implicated have not been released by law enforcement, in following Austrian law.
The family's disappearance was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.
Authorities stated the male associate told them at the time she had taken an prolonged visit with her daughter to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then found to have been used abroad on multiple occasions.
Yet when investigators searched the woman's home, her mobile phone was located.
A witness also reported overhearing a commotion in the dwelling, and screams of "mama" on the occasion the mother and child were believed to have vanished.
A wider official inquiry was started, with investigators finding several texts transmitted via the woman's phone—such as a resignation letter to her company and communications to the male associate.
Law enforcement said a four-figure sum was also sent to the suspect.
Katja Tersch informed the press on Tuesday that a storage unit had been leased before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been placed there.
The male siblings took out the cooling unit from the facility on the date the mother and daughter went missing, Tersch said. And a shortly afterward, they obtained another freezer.
Authorities believe they consider this suggests the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.
"How they died could not be determined due to the condition of the remains," Tersch said.
A legal representative—representing the state—noted the precise timeline is still unclear, but the victims were expertly concealed and were not found during a prior examination.
While the brothers were detained in the summer, it was only on November 12 that the elder brother acknowledged an event and to concealing the remains. He rejects any intent to kill, officials stated.
At the same time, his brother admitted to a cover-up but rejected involvement in a killing.
The two suspects are at this time in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.
In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative declared the "suspected killing of two... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of two individuals and reveals a brutal scheme".
"Female individuals are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are women and girls," they continued.
"Femicides are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
