Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The latest chapter concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to undertake their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes Teor (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the story’s plot—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then settled his obligations and escaped to a secure base in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Questers and Planners tables.

Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
