RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
