The player's retrieving strategy and frequent reactions on the tennis court had led commentators to wonder if his skill to perform at the elite level was finished.
Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an better service.
The champion came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the last five points to take the lead.
The competitors traded breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour championship, took control to force a final set.
He defended four initial break points in a competitive deciding set before the champion broke to that score to secure the win.
Suitably, he clinched the win with a rally at the net area, with Moutet unable to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
