Administration Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
