The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

F1 has revealed the new language that will be used to reference the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is introducing what is arguably the largest technical shift in its illustrious history next season, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced electrical capacity, requiring key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to extract the optimal performance.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would improve understanding of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The key objective was to make a range of advanced technical aspects of the sport as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in favor of descriptive names that directly explain the primary purpose of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that drivers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding battery management, harvesting, and conservation.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be visually displayed on television graphics to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a competitor is close behind the vehicle in front to facilitate an pass.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will utilize active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straights to improve speed and boost top speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the ERS, increasing from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic production methods.
